We're off again, destination Charleston

Packed and away by 9.30 destination Charleston.  How on earth five ladies can accumulate so much food and bags is beyond me.  Well actually, probably not.  We have a number of things booked and planned in Charleston so looking forward to that for tomorrow.  Today though is a recognizance mission.  Looking forward to seeing more amazing architecture and homes.

On the way to Charleston we took a slight detour to Beaufort (pronounced Bew-fort, sounds like you-fort).  A quick visit to the tourist information building where they had a big map of America and pins where all their visitors came from, mischievous Mollie and I decided to add a section with two pins for Esther and I !!

Beaufort is a sleepy little town, which may be due to it being a week day, not sure, and very historic with buildings from the Civil War.  We split up as we wanted to see different things.  Esther and I wandered looking at the houses and churches and ended up at a small Civil War museum and in speaking to the ladies there it was interesting to us that there was a pocket of people who still harbour end the north/south grudge.  It was also interesting at the small cemetery at the church that there was a mixture of Confederate and Yankee flags nestled into the graves.

Onward we continued after a good wander around town and ended up at Sullivan's Island.  How wonderful.  This was on Kathie's bucket list and I'm so glad we went.  Pristine beach on the Atlantic Ocean.  It was absolutely beautiful.  I was surprised when I checked the weather that it was only 12 Celsius as we were in short sleeves, the weather was wonderful.

Here we are, our heads just fit!!

Arrived in Charleston, a much bigger city than Savannah, checked into the hotel and then wandered downtown.  I tell you Pralines are huge down here.  HUGE!!  I mean huge as popular and huge as in big!  And they are absolutely delicious!  Every second store was offering free samples.  No need for dessert, just wander down the Main Street!!  And what is with the Caramel Apples?  Never seen anything like it, so different to our toffee apples.

Off to dinner at a very VERY nice restaurant called Magnolias.   We had checked out some lovely restaurants in advance from Australia and this one seemed that the menu was an adventure!   And an adventure it was.

Our waiter who shall remain nameless (to protect the not so innocent), let's call him Ted for the purpose of the exercise, was let's just say a tad snooty.  Don't get me wrong, it was an exceptional menu and meal and we had decided that tonight we were going to dine well.

I wanted to go completely Southern, I've been pretty much eating salads a lot when we've gone out, so I wanted this meal to be authentic.  I had pecan crusted chicken, mashed potatoes, collard greens with a side of grits.  Oh my!  Okay so we worked out that collard greens are just silver beet!

So snooty Ted did his job and ensured we were catered for, we could not take a sip of water before the glass was refilled, but always with his nose in the air.  We decided the meal was delish and all looked at each other when the dessert menu came round.  We tried to engage him in conversation and he did talk about his dogs, but it seemed a bit out of character for him to make chit chat with the diners.  Didn't need much convincing, dessert was definitely on the cards.  Amongst the other orders Esther and I decided to share 'Southern Pecan Pie' (with bourbon caramel sauce and vanilla bean icecream).

So Snooty Ted comes to deliver Kathie's apple cake and Lynnie's choc chip pound cake.  He places Kathie's plate ever so carefully down and arranges it just so, that the name of the restaurant on the plate was at 12  o'clock.  Then he goes to place Lynnie's plate down and I swear he was overcome with the five ravishing beauties in front of him, either that or he had heard of Lynnie's kleptomaniac ways with the fork at Paula Deen's and was trying to do a table count of cutlery in his head and lost concentration, that the plate jumped out of his hand.  It did a somersault in the air across the table and landed slap bang upside down on top of Kathie's plate and squished her apple cake so hard it split her plate in two.  Not only that but Lynnie's icecream scoop on top of her pound cake flew off the top of her cake and shot across the table, her wine glass full of water and ice fell over so hard it split the wine glass into two.  And nary a drop of any of this went on any of us.

Poor Snooty Ted was sooooo embarrassed and full of southern charm there was some "oh my gracious me's" thrown in.  He was mortified, and it didn't help that we were shaking trying to swallow our giggles, we just looked at each other and saw tears in each other's eyes we were laughing so much.  Everything after that was extraordinarily funny.  We just had to say something to each other and we were gone, falling about laughing!  He got us two replacement desserts immediately after wiping the table and then he was gone for an age.  I had visions of him holding on to the kitchen door with clenched fists begging not to go out to face the laughing ladies any more.

And if course the scrapbookers in us had the good grace not to take photos of the actual scene, but the aftermath tablecloth was not off limits.

When he did finally come out he couldn't be more apologetic once again, it was all too much and even now, hours later, just the thought of it still makes me laugh.  Poor Snooty Ted, I don't think tonight will be forgotten for a long time by him or us.

Savannah ... voted funniest city ever!!

I am a firm believer that we make our own fun, and today it was a combination of us and Savannah and we just haven't stopped laughing the whole day and night.

I Started the morning with an early morning run.  Though the sun was up when I peeked through the window but the street lighting here is so well lit it was actually street lighting, not daylight.   So I pottered around downstairs getting ready so I didn't wake anyone then got a shock when I googled the weather and found out it was only 3 C out there, brrrrrrr.  I was out the door and ran only 4.1km around Forsyth Park a number of times and around nearby streets.  So glad I popped in my running jacket, I definitely needed sleeves today.  A few people out and about.  A burly man kept passing me coming the other way and I would call out "goooood morning", second time I passed him I called out again "gooooooood morning again!" and the third time he passed me he quickly said "y'all have a good day now you hear".  Think that was his hint to not call out to him again.

And tried the Lime Chobani for breakfast.  Delicious.  It's a blended yoghurt so instead of plain on the top with fruit on the bottom, it was lovely light lime yoghurt all the way through the tub. Hope Hope Hope it comes to Australia.

Mollie was the honorary Aussie having some vegemite on toast for brecky, go Mollie!  She voted it very nice indeed.

So this morning we did a walking tour of Savannah with Phillip of Old City Walks which dealt with the history of the cotton trade and slavery.  We turned up and we five were the only ones booked on the tour. Score!!  The guide was so nice he tailored it just for us and ensured he took us to all the places that were full of history and perfect for photographs.  He was a gold mine of information and went way longer than scheduled as we were having such a great time.

However it was sooooo cold.  Although we had our jackets and scarves the two tough Aussies decided to wear our walking shoes with no socks.  BIG MISTAKE! I believe my feet turned blue at one stage.

Kathie going in for the kill, she's spent a lot of time on the ground during this trip...

But I took a sneaky one too...

A quick lunch and dived back to Mimosa House to grab the car (and my socks and boots!!) and off to Bonaventure Cemetary for an explore.  What an amazing and beautiful Cemetary with the trees with Spanish Moss hanging from them which was quite eerie.

Lots and lots of photos later and we headed back into the city ready for another quick explore and then dinner, which had already booked at Lady and Sons which is Paula Deen's restaurant for authentic southern cooking.

We had a terrific waiter looking after us Olandon and I tell you this was Lynnie's big moment to eat at Paula Deen's.

We had some really lovely food, I ended up having the Cornucopia Salad, delish!  And I had to order a side of Fried Green Tomatoes (just like at the whistle stop cafe).

On to our next fun thing, we had tickets to the Savannah Historic Theatre (pronounced theee-ay-ter by Mollie) to see the show Jukebox Journey.  I just knew we were in for a treat when they started, we were bopping in our seats, singing, laughing.  It was terrific.  They gave a call out to five women travelling on a girls trip and our arms flew up in the air and we cheered.  Then at one stage one of the singers came down and got me up on stage.  Oh Lordy Lordy I can't even remember what the song was but I was up there dancing with them.  I could only imagine the clicking going on by the ladies, oh did I mention we had front row seats???

If that wasn't enough when Elvis came out he made a beeline to find his "Priscilla" our very own Lynnie.  Well I don't think he bargained on how frisky Priscilla (Mark 2) was going to be.  Lynnie held onto him and wouldn't let him go.  She still is wearing his scarf sitting here back at the house looking at photos.  I am going to make the million dollar bet that she'll be wearing the scarf to bed tonight!!!!

Another photo courtesy of Mollie...

Love love love that!!

Tomorrow Charleston.

A Georgia kind of morning

"We sprang out of bed this morning and found ourselves hanging off the balcony taking photos of the sunrise. It was fleeting due to the mist across the marsh.

Right now however we are sitting in the 'Great Room' of the house smelling the most amazingly delicious smells coming from the kitchen.  Apparently the breakfast at this Blue Heron Inn is renowned.  And delicious it was. A slice of watermelon to start, then a plate with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and sweet potato pancakes with pecans and drizzled with maple syrup.

We walked off breakfast heading a couple of miles up the road hoping to photograph bird life.  We were a bit late in the morning unfortunately and all we got were some buzzards up a tree, a dead armadillo road kill and the local sheriff!!  He pulled up alongside wondering what on earth five women were doing wandering down the road in the middle of nowhere!

Here's some pics of our walk, including Lynn walking a sobriety test!!

Some pics from the Marsh and Kathie with one of the adorable house dogs,

So we soon hit the road for Savannah and arrived to find our house nestled into a pretty little street in the historic district.

Since arriving we have wandered all day, admiring the architecture and all the Squares in the city, a touch of green.

We found Chippewa Square where Forrest Gump's bus bench was situated in the movie.  The bench is no longer there, it's in the Savannah History museum, but look, the feather is still floating around!

So incredibly tired we are having biscuits (crackers for my American friends reading this), cheese and fruit.  That is after Esther and I braved the supermarket.

Now ... For my Australian friends ...CHECK THIS OUT!!! Squeeeeeeal!!!

Here for two nights so we can relax a bit now.

St Augustine to Darien

Getting ready of a morning with five women takes longer than we thought but finally we were on our way to brecky and starting today.  Actually before that Kathie, Esther and I dived out of bed at about 6.30 to take photos of the sunrise.  Just a lovely view from our balcony of the St George Inn, which also overlooks the Castillo de San Marcus.

Our gorgeously quaint Inn that we stayed at...

We visited the Castilla de San Marcos.  This masonry fort is the oldest and best preserved example of a Spanish fortification in the continental United States and for many years was the northernmost outpost of Spain's vast New World empire.

Such history and some wonderfully dressed soldiers re-enacted aiming and shooting over the water.

Some pics and a chat later had me taking a selfie with one of the soldiers...

We all voted this an amazingly good time exploring the fort and then we next visited the stripey lighthouse.  For ever so long I have looked at pics of this on the web and it was every bit as good as I imagined.

And how cool that the lighthouse cat is black and white too!  Kathie, once again, took some incredible angled shots...

Terrific view from the top...

Onward north and soon enough we were in Georgia.  Stopped for some lunch ... somewhere ...

And after a detour to Brunswick which wasn't exactly what we thought we got to Darien before dark.  Oh my goodness, the Blue Heron Inn is tucked way way into the marsh and we were soon sitting down by the camp fire with the other guests chatting with them, enjoying their company waiting for the shucked oysters.

We then headed back into Darrien to Skippers Fish Camp for dinner.  Mike will be very disappointed in me, not having shrimp or crab or oysters, but instead I had pulled pork with a side of baked potato and coleslaw.  Delicious.

Then we headed back.  Now let me explain, we are staying in what I have been told is the "boon docks" in a really charming Inn, in the middle of marsh lands, owned by a charming couple, with two dogs (Shadow and Sassy) and a couple of cats (including Ernestine the 6 clawed cat) who happens to be curled up on the couch with me right now purring like a train engine).  On the way back from Skippers we took a wrong turn, or we missed our turn and ended in the middle of nowhere.  In fits of giggles.  My map app just showed graph paper.

And Mollie took a photo of our surroundings.  Actually she took about ten photos of the surroundings, in case we were lost forever more and they found our withered bodies in the car in months to come!  This of course had us in fits of giggles, wondering if we did a u-ey would we end up down in the marsh!

Finally found our way back and then Mollie decided to take a shadow pic which she decided "well that's just silly, now we look like a four headed monster"!!!  Now if you are reading this and know Mollie I bet you can just hear her saying that.

A big day, Lynnie the "rev head" is doing amazing with the driving, doing some pretty great maneuvers with Mildred the GPS (and let's face it driving on the wrong side of the road every maneuver looks pretty incredible to us) and the others have taken to bed as Esther and I have stayed up tapping on our screens updating our blogs.  Very intermittent reception here so this blog post may not be published until tomorrow.  And Ernestine keeps wanting to crawl up on my lap and is getting a bit insistent so I'm thinking time for bed for me too.

But before I go have I mentioned how much I love these ladies...

Beautiful Kathie

Lovely Lynnie

Darling Mollie acting like a little koala in a tree

And my dear friend Esther who put this all together, thank you soooo much Esther

And away we go...

The Thelma, Louise, Mabel, Dotty and Delores road trip has begun in earnest and today we travelled to St Augustine in our rented red Dodge.  Move over drivers, we have Lynnie at the wheel.  We fitted all our cases and baggage in and away we went.

Got to St Augustine about 3 hours later and found our very quaint lodgings for the night right slap bang in the middle of the historical district, on the top floor with a balcony on two sides with rickety old rocking chairs.  Actually I'm writing this blog post from that balcony listening to a band playing up the road.

So we arrived here at the tail end of a two day Annual Pirate Festival, and even though it was mid afternoon there were still pirates wandering around.

We went for a wander up this lane way street that we are situated on which houses some absolutely wonderful shops, quaint, artisans, specialty shops, all amazing.  I bought a number of goodies, hmmm just as my case was looking a bit better having unloaded Tim Tams and pressies for people.

Wandering amongst this quaint cobblestoned area meant our cameras were primed and ready to do business, here's a mix of photos from today...

Beautiful Mollie, always up for a good shot...

Kathie was worn out and decided to have a snooze!  Ha.  Kidding.  Anything for a good shot.  And let me tell you, the shot was gooood!!

So good in fact, she celebrated with one of the locals... Oh Kathie!!

The amazing Lynn who is doing the driving this trip, just quietly she says she's a granny driver, but I'm calling her a rev head!!

It got dark quick and we found a great eating place and sat up on the balcony feasting like Queens ... shivering Queens when the breeze picked up.

Mollie shocked us all when she couldn't resist sliding down the bannister!

On the way back we stopped at a small market and saw some really lovely paintings, listened to a fellow playing music on the kettle drum, and wandered back, stopping for takeaway cake at a cake shop.  Yep, we needed dessert for sure.

And now it's time to recharge our batteries (cameras included!!) for tomorrow, including the Remembrance Day service.
